Highways and By-Ways

In 1984, Preacher Bob arrived in Knoxville, TN with only two changes of clothes and $25. Preacher Tom Coulter helpd Bob get on his feet and Bob met his wife, Mary. In 1987 Highways and By-Ways Ministry was formed to help street souls one-on-one under bridges, railroad tracks, local grave yards and homeless camps in the Knoxville area. We meet every Thursday night for a time of worship and a meal.

OBY

Operation Backyard provides free home repair services for low-income homeowners. Powell Church servants provide the work and homeowners with limited income receive much-needed home repairs. Servants experience the reward of helping those less fortunate than themselves, and find they have been ministered to as well. The entire community grows closer and stronger in the process. If you are interested in serving in this ministry or learning more about it, click here for the OBY website or contact Jamie at jsbauknight@gmail.com.

Morgan Scott Project

Powell Church provides support to the Morgan Scott Project in Deer Lodge, Tennessee with financial contributions as well as collecting vegetable seeds each spring for their Good Earth Garden project. This project provides seeds and fertilizer to families that might not otherwise be able to afford to plant a vegetable garden. To learn more about the Morgan Scott Project, go to their website at www.morganscottproject.org.

    The Clothes Closet

We are now accepting clothes for a new clothing ministry at Powell Church.

Donations of clothing should show respect for the humanity of the person receiving them whether they are a member of the homeless community, a member of our church, or a member of our own community. People often think of donations as an easy way to just get rid of old clothes. However, donations are very important in providing clean (free of smoke/mildew), quality and current style clothing to those in need. Please donate responsibly and choose items that are useful for our neighbors.

Fall/Winter items that are needed and helpful:

  • Men’s pants, jeans, long-sleeved shirts & T-shirts
  • Men’s socks and underwear, shoes
  • Women’s pants, jeans, long-sleeved shirts &T-Shirts
  • Women’s underwear, bras, socks, shoes
  • Children & Teen: pants, jeans, long-sleeved shirts & T-shirts, dresses
